GENERAL

NAME: Jade Emilia Otterwell
NICKNAMES: Not really.
AGE/DOB: 16/ January 23
BLOOD STATUS:Pureblood
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female;she/her
SEXUALITY: We'll see. She hasn't ever had a chance to settle down long enough to figure this out
HOMETOWN: Her home base is technically Vancouver, Canada. She summers in her mother's hometown, Antigua, Guatemala. But she's lived actually everywhere.
CONCEPT: Constantly uprooted child finds home she doesn't want to sabotage. Usually.

PHYSICAL

APPEARANCE: Jade tries for haughty looking and dignified, like her mother is, but comes across as awkward more than half the time instead. While she'll be probably quite pretty when she's older, she's still in the middle of growing into her face and body. She has no idea what to do with her face when making expressions, or her hair. On the best of days, it's full and brushed. When she is making a Statement, or is just too lazy to bother with it, it's depressing and lank. She wears her uniform fastidiously. Clothing she chooses tends to verge on the old side of vintage. She likes simple European styles and sleek "artistic" all-black ensembles. (These, whenever she happens to be Acting.) She wears a lot of hats, literally, and has gone full beret way too many times.
HEIGHT: 5'5"

PB: Maria Valverde

PERSONALITY

LIKES: Acting, Writing, having attention, new charms, old clothes, big cities, summers in Guatemala or Vancouver, being in one place for a long time, pretty jewelry, wearing all black, berets, tea, hot chocolate, having Actual Friends, having people who are just scared of her, her baby brother, her parents when they're not at work

DISLIKES: TRAVELLING, suitcases, hotels, PORTKEYS, most no-maj tech (she doesn't get it,) her parents' jobs, being the new kid at school, not getting starring roles, not being in on jokes, the feeling when she KNOWS someone is talking about her, her hair in the morning, her hair always, coffee, being forced to pretend to enjoy new situations, her parents when they're making her move

PERSONALITY:
So far, in Jade's life, the most important part of her has been her reputation, and how fast she can make one for herself. Unfortunately, she's found that the easiest and quickest way to never be forgotten and to make a true impact is to be really rude to a large amount of people. She's also found she can pull it off really well. The rich, snobby pureblood act isn't a new one. It is, however, definitely mostly an act, put on so that she feel more empowered than the way she usually did as a child, which was mostly like an old satchel just carried along because it was convenient. She mostly wants her own wishes and desires to not be ignored. Sometimes (often), that gets carried away.

Not to make her a martyr, though. She definitely shouldn't be. Jade has, from early childhood, been always significantly self-involved, even selfish. She's a sensitive person who gets hurt very easily. She is incredibly thin-skinned around insults, and takes them to heart. The trouble is, she takes that a step farther by thinking her pain is what matters most, and has yet to learn ways to just deal with it or move past it. Since a few years ago, her method of coping instead has been to fight back. She finds it easy to step on people through various degrees of being really mean. She's creative enough for insults and (sometimes damaging) pranks. But they're always to achieve something, or because she's mad. She's never mean for the sake of it. Jade thinks that makes it better. It probably doesn't.

She's quite adaptable. Jade knew as soon as she moved to Gooseberry that some of her middle-school antics probably wouldn't be smiled upon here in the hippie mountain school. Creating a new persona while keeping facets of her old one wasn't that hard. Actually, it was probably a bit too easy. Jade's penchant for bending her own persona into any given situation can come across as a little fake. It is. She will never change herself for anyone else, it is mostly for herself. It all comes across as very hot and cold in practice. One day Jade could be someone's best friend, but if they have something she wants, and she's decided to freeze them out to make them feel badly the next day, she will absolutely not hesitate in doing so. She assumes everyone else is doing the same thing, anyway. People are inherently selfish, and so why shouldn't she be? She is very cynical for a 16 year old, sometimes.

She does have a lot of feelings, and they come out in her passions. She's a good actress, as much as she plays it up with her 'artsy' all-black ensembles and diva moments of locking the main stars in the locker rooms so she'll have to go on as an understudy. (That happend ONE TIME.) But really, she loves acting. It gives her a vehicle for her many faces, and she always feels calmer after she's been in a show. Of course, the attention doesn't hurt, and that's largely why she says she's in shows. But it isn't. Other outlets include stories she writes in charmed notebooks that no one can ever, ever see. It's all very bad teenage prose. Please don't look.

Jade's still very immature. It's what makes her temper so short, and what makes her lash out so quickly. She doesn't step down from anything. Her name is Jade Effing Otterwell; she is a pureblood, and she doesn't want to give the impression that she thinks anyone is better than her. But she really kind of does. Especially everyone at this school. They're so impressive. Not that she admits that. Jade's very catlike in her friend-making skills. She shows interest, then shies away, then bites a few hands, until people have stuck around enough and she's found that they won't leave. Then she'll stay around. That should improve, after she's found some stability. But she's still looking for that.

HISTORY

FAMILY MEMBERS:

MOTHER: Jacinta Riera; Pureblood; Guatemalan diplomat
DAD: Lawrence Otterwell; Pureblood; International Trade Lawyer, Canadian MoM
BROTHER: Terrence Otterwell; Pureblood; Currently much more well adjusted; 10

HISTORY:

Jacinta and Lawrence liked to pretend that they had a star-crossed beginning to their relationship, that they defied all odds. The only odd they really had against them was geography, though, and that doesn't really count with airplanes and magic combined. Jacinta's family was a powerful Central American pureblood one from a wizard community tucked away in Antigua, Guatemala. When she got to be 20 and wanted to travel, she did diplomat work for her country pretty easily. Lawrence was a trade lawyer for the Canadian Ministry of Magic. So when they met and shared first a wonderful gala and then weekend in New York City, they weren't defeating many odds at all. They were actually very similar. They were both driven, beautiful, rich people who had been born with at least some percent of silver spoon in their mouths.

The actual dating part was difficult. They wrote a lot of letters. Their owls got very tired. They got tired of it too, and decided to marry inside a few months. It was logical. Combining Pureblood families from far away and mixing bloodlines was never a wrong thing. To keep up the aura that they were doing something rebellious, they eloped in a partnership both their parents definitely supported anyway. They settled eventually in Vancouver, but never really settled long. Both of their jobs sent them in opposite directions a lot. Their decision to have children meant that they hired nannies for years. But when both Otterwells went on assignment, it was impossible for them to leave young children with au pairs for literal months on end. Eventually, they both tried to be at least in the same country at once. It's just that was always changing.

Jade was born in Canada, and a citizen there and Guatemala both, because of Jacinta. Unfortunately, as of her very first portkey, Jade really hated travelling. That is something that stuck. Jade's early life was spent scattered around the Americas, sometimes in Europe, as an accessory to whatever assignment her parents happened to be on at the time. Jacinta and Louis tried to give their children as normal lives as they could. Still, little Jade was not a happy child. She was one of those babies who always seemed to have a chip on her shoulder for no real reason. Impossible to please, she was a picky eater. Her clothes never felt right. She hated for everyone except her parents to hold her. She was always exhausting. Her mother felt some guilt about this, and quit most of her diplomat work when Jade was little because she wanted to be around. Of course, it didn't really do much except for drive Jacinta crazy in a home with a cranky preschooler. But she did try. Her parents thought another child, a playmate for Jade would be good. Jade really did like her little brother, who was born when she was five. He was like a doll to her, but the only person around who she was consistently pleasant, kind, and open around. It's quite like that even now.

Jade and Louis never went to just one school, because boarding schools weren't quite as common for smaller children, and their parents did not want them to rely on tutors. They went to small, specialized schools for international students, because it was an environment where they could be exposed to people of all different backgrounds. Many students had similar backgrounds, having grown up in several countries. Once Jade was in school, her parents thought that she would adjust. And she really did. She liked school. It was just she had to keep changing. And Jade hated change.

Even in grade school, Jade decided that it wasn't fair to be uprooted so many times. But it wasn't just because of whatever entitlement she felt. Jade really was painfully shy as a child, and hated having to leave a comfortable place just when she'd finally started adjusting. It didn't get any easier the more she had to do it. There was always the harrowing period of being a new kid, then making a few friends, growing to trust them, and then watching as it was all ripped away from her when one of her parents decided to country-hop for the nine millionth time.

That didn't get much easier as she got older. Harder, actually. Year after year, she got a little more sick of it. At a certain point, Jade didn't even try to make friends. (What was the point?) She found that she could avoid the adjustment/uprooting circle by feigning how bored she was, at everyone. She began to control people by using the very emotions for which she used to be ignored. This revelation taught her how to be an excellent actress, sociopath, or maybe both. She learned to stride up to the most popular kids in whichever school she was in and demand their respect. She earned it by making fun of whatever children happened to be beneath her, or if the case really called for it, by trying to take down whoever was at the top. She could never really see the full repercussions for her actions. Usually at that point, her father had won a case, and she was back to Vancouver, or off to France, or wherever. She got to scorch some earth, the schools didn't have to deal with her long. It was a win/win, as far as Jade was concerned.

Unfortunately, her conduct reports still went home to her parents, and they were Very concerned. To counter it, they decided that every year, they would at least go on summer holiday and remain in Antigua for three months; a cleanse from all the people that Jade was victimizing. This really only isolated her more, though. When the new school year started, she was worse than before. Her parents made her join extra-curricular activities instead, hoping some positive influence would happen there. She chose acting when she was in seventh grade. And actually, it did exactly what Jacinta and Lewis had hoped. When she was in a play, her energies went towards that, less towards climbing the middle school social ladder. They breathed a little sigh of relief.

The only trouble was, when she was all set to lead a play in a school in London, there was a call back to Canada. Jade almost refused to go. It wasn't fair. But she had to go. Her grand exit was to set up a trap on stage so that her replacement would fall and literally break her leg on opening night. Actually, she only wanted her to fall. It worked a little too well. No one could prove that was her, but she felt pretty vindicated anyway. Jade still refused to speak to her parents for upwards of three weeks. Everyone involved was deeply unhappy. That's when her parents began to explore Jade's high school options.

Gooseberry was the perfect choice, now that Jade had systematically burnt all the bridges at every international academy in the western hemisphere. (This is only maybe an exaggeration!) It was small, which she needed, homey, which she also did, and tucked away in the middle of nowhere. Plus the drama department looked amazing. Jade was a little hesitant about the idea. She fancied herself far too metropolitan for such a hicksville place, but in her very deepest heart of hearts, she realized that if she went to this school, she wouldn't be toted around like an old suitcase anymore. She would get to establish a base. A home. The scales were tipped when her family mentioned what a good drama program there was. They didn't mention footage of her acting was how she even got into the school in the first place. They did mention how quickly she'd be thrown out if she pulled the stuff that she did in middle school. Tellingly, Jade did not even complain much while packing her bags to the middle of nowhere.

Once at Gooseberry, Jade was sorted into Azurcrest, and was a little unsure of how to approach this new situation. The Mean Girl Revolution was how she started, but in a slightly toned down way. She wasn't going to orchestrate any broken legs here. (Even if she did get the impression that it wouldn't be too hard; what with all the snow sports.) She didn't really want everyone to hate her; that wasn't the point. As a freshman, she still found it sometimes necessary to assert her dominance, but this school had a definite hierarchy that she didn't want to mess with too much. She was that brave freshman owl who would open her pet Senior's packages and steal one of the chocolates they were sending. She was haughty enough to keep up her Reputation. But it was tempered, here. She wanted to do well. Maybe make some actual friends.

Jade joined Drama, but hasn't got leads yet. She knows that's because she's young, and she hasn't even sabotaged anyone yet. She's doing better in her classes, because she knows she'll be around to do the final exams. All of this stability is not making her any friendlier yet. But it is calming her down. So hey. Maybe there's hope.

SCHOOL

YEAR: Sophomore (Grade 10)
HOUSE: Azurcrest
SORTING: You know those people who are sorted into houses because the house emblem wants to improve the person's skill in that area? The bird saw how much work she had to do in order to be a decent human, and it's very likely that's why she's an Azurcrest. Ultimately, what she wanted from Gooseberry was a home, and to actually make connections with people. The bird gave the most persuasive argument in that direction, though Ebonhide saw all of her feelings. She wanted family, so she chose Azurcrest.
Sorry, Azurcrest.

WAND: Cherry, Veela hair, 11"; just as tempermental as she is
FAMILIAR: A small grey cat named Oliver. They have an understanding; he sits on her head til she remembers he exists and feeds him; she cuddles him when she needs comfort.

CLASSES: Charms, Herbology, Hermeticism, Transfiguration, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Aesthetic Magic, Astronomy
SENIOR PROJECT: SHE'S A BABY; she doesn't know
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE:
Jade got into Gooseberry based on her family and acting talents. Not academics, particularly. She takes a lot of difficult classes, though, because she doesn't really want to look stupid. Since she's been in school here, though, she's caught up to speed on her classes. More teacher attention helped a lot, as did actually staying in one school for this long. She got a little carried away this year, and is moderately struggling, but maintaining mostly Bs. She particularly loves Hermeticism and Charms, because she likes seeing what magic can become, and the idea of creating something with power. (...She's totally in DADA for the hexes.) She'd love to create her own spell someday. She just has no idea what yet.
EXTRACURRICULARS:
Drama
Event Committee, because it has a certain amount of clout
Duelling/Fencing, mostly for the hexes.

Her secret of secrets is that she thinks LARP looks really fun, but it's so nerdy. She still can't let go of her reputation quite that much. Yet. So she is not in that. Yet.
